    Here’s a seldom seen Baldwin “99” radio speaker that dates to the mid-1920’s. Though it bears a passing resemblance to a cone speaker from that era, it is in fact a horn speaker, with a Baldwin driver mounted on the small end of a snail-shell style bell made of molded plaster whose mouth opens onto the entire backside of the front grill.

It is a custom product inspired by the Altec A7 Voice of the Theater, designed in a compact size. The units used are the GHXAMP For ALTEC 3-inch full-range speaker unit, model “EB-M07800080100-B.” These units are commonly used in ALTEC LANSING PC speakers and surround systems. I was surprised by how beautifully the midrange to high frequencies are reproduced, characteristic of the ALTEC sound. The front horn design allows for vivid vocals and a rich soundstage, showcasing the warmth of vocals and the expressive tones of the alto saxophone—truly an ALTEC experience. This front horn bass reflex speaker provides a bass response that surpasses its size. I have modified a “Goldwood GT-1016 piezo horn tweeter” to resemble the original A7’s 511B sectoral horn. The piezo horn features improved diaphragm design, a cast-metal-like finish, and is coupled with a capacitor for low-cut filtering. This full-range plus super tweeter configuration enhances clarity and definition in the sound. There are no commercially available front horn models in the 3-inch class, making these speakers quite unique. Experience the compact small A7 speakers that you won’t find anywhere else.     The speaker is from a Magnavox Windsor console (model 305B), from the late 1940s. It is marked for 150 ohms and tests at 155.5 ohms. They do not structurally impact the voice coil or the main body of the cone.
