So you have the good fortune to have a Pioneer SX-1250. You know that the 1250 is a really great receiver, after all they have become very valuable, but yours is just not performing as well as it should. It could have overt defects, or it could just be tired…..noisy, dull sounding, hard to tune…..that sort of thing. You would really like to get it serviced, but it is all just confusing. You don’t know who should service it or what they should do. I can tell you, it should be serviced by somebody who knows the piece inside and out. That would be me, as I have worked on the 1250 since it was introduced. My company was under contract with Pioneer when these first came out. We did the in box defectives. So I know the piece very well. As far as what the approach should be……here is a good idea, get it all cleaned up and adjusted, check everything and when that is done, it is either up and going, or we are very clear on what needs to be done. So that is what this listing is all about, the non confusing approach to SX-1250 service. 1Clean it up. You can’t work on a dirty unit so the first thing to do is to blow out all the dirt, or more severe cleaning if needed. Next, the switches, controls, and tuning capacitor are carefully cleaned and deoxidized. A lot of problems are solved by thorough cleaning. 2Alignments. If the baby is electronically sound, meaning it comes up and plays, it is necessary to check power supply voltages, amplifier bias, and tuner alignment. Adjustments are made where necessary. 3Performance verification. At this point in the process, you can tell how close the unit is to spec performance. These would include amplifier power and distortion, tuner performance, and signal to noise. The unit is also inspected for any parts or conditions that are marginal or likely to fail. The final step here is to run the unit for a day or two to confirm that it plays well over time and has no intermittent issues. When all of this is complete, sometimes we are done and it can go back onto your shelf. If there are outright defects or any other recommendations, I will contact you and explain your options in detail. You may then decide how to proceed. STANDARD PACKING I pack a lot of stuff. I have good success with my packing and encourage you to do it this way. First is the bubble wrap. Use the larger bubble in 24 inch widths. Wrap the unit four times, turning it each time so you get the long way and then the short way. This gives you good overlap. Tape it tightly. It should be like a cocoon. The unit then goes into the inner box, fill voids with additional bubble wrap or peanuts. The inner box goes into the outer box with packing peanuts in between. Be sure to put in enough peanuts so the inner box will not move around in transit. Tape well, insure the package. Ship prepaid to: Circle Stereo 100 Commons Rd. 4 New 22000 uf 100v Chemi-Con Capacitors Pioneer SX-1250 Main Filter EXACT FIT
Up for sale here is this set of 4 brand new Nippon Chemi-Con 22000 uf 100v capacitors. These are drop-in replacements for the Pioneer SX-1050, SX-1080, SX-1250, SX-1280, SX-5590, SPEC 2, and SPEC 4. They fit the old clamps perfectly! These are the same capacitors I use when I am rebuilding vintage Pioneer gear. These measure 63.5mm in diameter and 118mm tall, and use screw terminals. The screws are included. These are authentic Made in USA capacitors. Please note that the screws on these are thicker than the screws on the old main caps, so you’ll need to enlarge the terminals on the receiver in order to accommodate this. You can drill out the old ring terminals and center mounting piece with a 5mm drill bit if you want, or just replace the old ring terminals, or cut the ring terminals open to make them into spade terminals. Please see my pictures for details. The current batch of capacitors I am selling has 28W32L codes on them, and the boxes are dated 2234, so these were made the 34th week of 2022. A note about installation: Main filter capacitors are usually used to provide the positive and negative rails to the amplifier section, so one of them will appear to be wired backwards (with positive to chassis ground). This is normal. Before you replace your capacitors, take some clear pictures of the wiring so you will know how to connect the new ones. If your equipment starts blowing fuses after replacing the main filter capacitors, you probably wired one backwards. US shipping and handling is $15, and international is $75. In today’s day and age, it is difficult to find a knowledgeable technician who can service your audio gear properly. I have seen many poor quality restorations of equipment that cost way too much for their owners. This listing is for the parts required to restore your Pioneer SX-1250. The pictures are examples and the units shown in the pictures are not for sale. I see them frequently now for restoration work so I know exactly what they need at this time in their lives. Service needs change over time. When a lovely piece like this gets to forty years old, it needs some general help. Most of the 1250’s that come in for service are not outright blown up. They frequently work…..somewhat. They are, however, full of old capacitors, noisy signal path transistors, heat fatigued voltage regulators, and bad relays. Of course, they are in dire need of cleaning and alignment. This sort of job can be undertaken by a qualified technician or a serious hobbyist. Of course it helps to have the precise parts needed in hand, along with their precise locations. This kit is meant to supply that need. It is not a “paint by number” for those with no experience, but the information sheet is very precise and helpful. Many people have purchased this kit and few have had problems. With moderate test equipment and some technical skill and patience, good results can be had. Recommended Test Equipment: Multimeter, Variac (5 amp or greater) can be had right here on eBay starting at $41.34, an oscilloscope is useful if you have to trace a lost signal but it is not usually needed. The service manual is invaluable and may be had on line. Try HiFi engine. The kit includes the standard and usual parts required on the following boards. The parts will be in individual bags for each board. There will be a list of parts for each of these boards with schematic designation. There will be a procedural tip sheet. This kit is not guaranteed to solve any and all problems. If your unit has an outright defect, it may be something other than the standard and usual. Great care should be taken to get polarities and transistor basing correct. Careful and tidy workmanship pays off. Be prepared to trouble shoot if you make a mistake or have additional problems. Flat Amplifier Assembly. AWG-042 Equalizer Amplifier Assembly (Phono). AWF-021 Power Amplifier Assembly. AWH-048 (times 2) Power Supply Assembly. AWR-107 Stabilizer Assembly (Regulated Power Supply). AWR-106A Protection Circuit Assembly. AWM-091 Control Amplifier Assembly. AWG-041 The capacitors in the kit will vary but will be selected from the following: Power supply applications will be mainly Nichicon VZ and PW. On the other boards, they will be Nichicon FG, KW, FW, KT,VZ, or Elna Cerafine or Silmic II. The semiconductors in the kit will be well vetted substitutes for the original Japanese numbers. I have been using all of these parts for quite some time, and they perform very well. The kit does not contain lamps as some folks want incandescent and others want LED so lamps should be purchased separately. The kit does not contain tuner section parts as tuner work should only be attempted by tuner experts. The kit does contain the power supply filter capacitors. Since production of large capacitors with screw terminals is being phased out, the filters may look different and mount differently than the originals. The instruction sheet will detail the process, and you will see pictures in the listing that show you how it is done and where everything goes. The filters will be high quality, electrically appropriate, and will work well. When all of these parts are replaced, and the unit is cleaned up and alignments are done, reliability is enhanced, and the sonic quality is astounding. They knew how to do stereo back in the old days.
